Transport company hl. m. The Prague City Council (DPP) is planning to purchase two new cars for the Petřín cableway and has announced a public tender for their supplier.

It is the next step in the project of modernization of the line and vehicles of the cableway to Petřín. The cars will be produced in accordance with the design proposal of the Anna Marešová designers studio, which won the competition for their new look last year. The estimated total value of this public contract is CZK 150 million. DPP expects to announce the winner of the tender and sign a contract with it during the second quarter of this year.

The subject of this public contract is the production, delivery and commissioning of two new cars for the Petřín cableway. The vehicles must be manufactured in accordance with the valid EU and Czech legislation and standards related to safety requirements for passenger rope transport. The transport capacity of each car must be at least 100 passengers plus staff.

“The service life of the vehicles, but especially of the Petřín cable car line, is coming to an end. Last year we managed to win a competition with DPP for the design of the new cable cars. The new design works with the genius of the Petřín loci and its concept will not only be a worthy continuation of the outgoing generation of vehicles, but will continue to co-create the image of Prague Petřín as a unique site of global significance. All the steps will be coordinated so that during the time when the new cars are being produced, DPP will be able to carry out the rehabilitation of the Petřín slope and reconstruct the line. The aim is for the first passengers to ride the Petřín cable car in new cars on the new line in spring 2025 at the latest,” says Zdeněk Hřib, 1. Deputy Mayor of the Capital City of Prague m. Prague for transport.

The task of the finalists was to develop a design for the body and interior of the new cable car to Petřín.

“Revealed, airy, loved – this was our slogan for the entire project of the new cable car to Petřín. We designed it with respect for its heritage and location, but in a way that is comfortable and technologically advanced. We wanted to avoid a sporty or flashy look and chose a sustainable and functional design. We maximised the view and created an open and airy cable car for the best possible ride experience. We believe it will serve people well and entertain them for at least another 30 years,” added Anna Marešová, chief designer of the project and winner of the international design competition for the new design of the cable car to Petřín.
