After two years of reconstruction, the Prague Planetarium is opening to the public again. The result of the modernization is the first fully digital LED planetarium in Europe and the largest LED dome of its kind in the world.
“What visitors will see is absolutely unique. The reactions of everyone we’ve shown the system to have been overwhelmed, without exception.” says Jakub Rozehnal, director of Planetum. The grand opening weekend for the public is scheduled for 14. and 15 June 2025.
A breathtaking picture of the universe at the Planetarium Prague

unprecedented depth of colour, sharpness and realism of image – and transformed not only the way
viewers perceive science and space, but also how they perceive culture.
Thanks to Cosm’s technology, the Planetarium Prague now has an LED projection dome consisting of approximately 45 million diodes on more than 12 thousand special panels that create a breathtaking image of the universe. The LED panels have up to 100 times the light output of conventional projectors and can thus create a contrast that is unattainable with conventional planetarium projection. This allows us to create the illusion of a 3D experience even on a 2D screen.
Reconstruction of the Prague Planetarium in numbers
The total investment was CZK 300 million (USD 12.5 million), of which approximately CZK 200 million was spent on the dome construction and LED technology. The remaining part was used for construction work related to the expansion and modernisation of the visitor areas, upgrading the air conditioning and heat management system. The entire project was financed from the budget of the City of Prague, which is the founder of the Planetum. “Thanks to this successful investment, Prague is gaining a design space that is unparalleled in Europe. This centre will serve not only the popularization of space science, but also other educational and cultural events,” says Daniel Mazur, Councillor for ICT, Smart City, Science, Research and Innovation of the Capital City of Prague. m.
