Exhibition Grant of Prague – 30th Anniversary of the Czech Press Photo Competition

On Tuesday, 4 February 2025, the Prague City Hall opened the Grant of Prague exhibition at Mariánské náměstí, which was created on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the Czech Press Photo competition.

A unique view of the metropolis

The Prague Grant is part of the second main prize awarded annually – it is a one-year creative grant to monitor the transformation of Prague. The award-winning author is personally selected by the Mayor of Prague on the recommendation of an international jury and thanks to the resulting photographs the capital gains a unique view of the metropolis captured from various thematic angles and its shape over time.

The exhibition was created in cooperation with Czech Photo, and the authors of the individual photographs are renowned Czech photographers. It will be on display on Marian Square on a total of 16 panels until the end of February.

“Photography is actually an extremely powerful phenomenon. How many human lives have they delighted, mended, improved, changed and probably destroyed. They are memories, art, reminders, a source of entertainment. Czech Press Photo is a competition where it is very difficult to award the best of the best Czech photographers. For thirty years, Prague has participated economically in the organisation of the competition and in the selection of the winning images. And it will be very happy to continue to participate,” says the mayor of the capital. m. Prague Bohuslav Svoboda.

“The Prague Grant under the Czech Press Photo banner is a living archive of the changes in our society and our capital city. Thanks to it, we have at our disposal a unique visual chronicle that captures not only the architectural transformations of the metropolis, but also its genius loci – from everyday moments to extraordinary events. I am glad that we are now presenting this chronicle to the public, who can see the fascinating development of Prague over the last 30 years.” adds Jiří Pospíšil, Prague’s Deputy Minister for Culture, Tourism, Exhibitions, Heritage Care, National Minorities and Animal Welfare.

The Czech Press Photo competition has been presenting the best journalistic photographs for 30 years. Each past year is most visibly characterised by the winning photograph of the year and the Prague Grant, which is selected by the Mayor himself. I am glad that an overview of all the grant works in the outdoor gallery can now be seen by both Prague residents and foreign visitors. Prague has many faces and when captured by our best photographers, it creates very valuable material for the future. We thank Prague for its long-term support of this project,” concludes Veronika Souralová, director of Czech Photo.

Visiting the exhibition with a boat trip

Combining a visit to the exhibition with a boat trip on the Vltava River is a great way to enjoy the day and get to know Prague from a different perspective.
